Hidd Power Company

Hidd Power Company is an independent Water and Power Plant in Bahrain, jointly owned by three multinational companies. Operating under a Power and Water Purchase Agreement with the Electricity and Water Authority. HPC can produce 1,000 MWH of power and 90 MIGD of water.

HPC – A Key Infrastructure facility for the Kingdom

Strategically located in the Hidd Industrial Area, HPC is vital in supporting Bahrain’s power and water infrastructure. The company operates under a Power and Water Purchase Agreement (PWPA) with the Electricity and Water Authority, Bahrain. HPC business is managed by a professional team of 100+ employees in which Bahraini nationals are 36%, reflecting the company’s commitment to local talent development.

Power Generation at HPC

The power generation facility at HPC consists of five Gas Turbine Generators and one Steam Turbine Generator, with a total gross capacity of 1000 MW. The plant operates using natural gas as fuel for the gas turbines, while waste heat from these turbines is recovered in the form of steam to drive the steam turbine, enhancing efficiency. The electricity generated at HPC is transmitted to the Hidd 220 kV substation, with real-time power plant output data monitored and sent to the Electricity & Water Authority (EWA) system control centre. The plant's load is regulated as per system control requirements.

Potable Water Production at HPC

HPC’s potable water production facility utilizes seawater desalination technologies, including Multistage Flash (MSF) Distillation and Multi-Effect Desalination (MED), to ensure a reliable supply of high-quality water. The desalination process uses low-pressure steam from the power island, efficiently converting seawater into distillate water. This water is then remineralized to meet potable water specifications before being supplied to the Electricity & Water Authority (EWA) storage facilities. To maintain the highest quality standards, HPC continuously monitors the product water through online systems and conducts rigorous quality testing in its state-of-the-art laboratory facility.

Water Production at HPC

HPC desalination facility consists of Multi Effect Desalination (MED) units that together has the capacity to produce 17,000 cubic meter an hour of desalinated water.
The desalination process uses low-pressure steam from the power island, to evaporate seawater and produce distillate water. The distillate water is then re-mineralized to meet portable water specifications before being supplied to Electricity & Water Authority (EWA) storage facilities.
